The âAssessment of the World Food Situation,â presented to the 1984 World Food Conference, helped focus attention on the âworld food gapâ that threatened developing countries. UNCHE helped to identify the urgency of addressing land-based marine pollution, as well as identifying the institutional need of creating a global environmental monitoring system, that subsequently became one of UNEPâs core activities (Gosovic 1992).
